Ford Explorer: Insurance Costs
Minivans and SUV’s are generally the more economic choices of cars to insure these days. This is because usually it’s married individuals with children that purchase these vehicles, due to the need for space. Married individuals are statistically proven to be more responsible behind the wheel. The Explorer, itself, has been recognized in the IIHS’ top 10 most economical cars to insure category.
Ford Explorers are generally not used on the commute to work according to statistics. So, this limits the annual mileage on the car, thus making the monthly premium lower. It is also very low on the list of cars usually stolen, so your comprehensive costs are likely to be smaller.

Ford Explorer: Reviews
The Explorer has undergone substantial changes in its 2011 models. It’s been the general opinion of many reviewers that it is superior in almost every way to the previous models. Interior space has increased, materials used on the interior are higher quality, and the car has many luxury options that weren’t available before. However, there is a downside; cargo space and third-row room is less than in other cars in its class.
It comes standard with a 3.5-liter V6 engine, though it has a greener option, letting the driver choose from a turbocharged 4 cylinder engine.
The Explorer comes in three trim levels: base, XLT, and limited. The base model comes equipped with various features, but what really makes the Explorer shine are the other two trim levels. It comes standard with stability control, and several air bags.
Luxury features like leather seating, a rearview camera, keyless ignition, and premium stereo can be seen as you go up the trim tree. You can even equip it further, with optional features such as:
- GPS Navigation System
- Adaptive Cruise Control
- Automatic Parallel Parking System
- DVD Entertainment System in the Rear Seats
Ford Explorer: Safety
Safety ratings and features can also be a good way to save. The 2011 Explorer has performed well in front, side, roof, and rear crash tests, receiving “good” as its score. It is recognized by the IIHS as a top safety pick. The 2012 hasn’t been crash tested yet; however, if the 2011 is anything to go by, it will have good ratings as well.
It has an impressive array of safety features, though among the features that make it unique among cars is the MyKey system. The MyKey system allows parents to limit the car’s performance when their inexperienced children drive it. It can do many things ranging from limiting the top speed to limiting how loud the stereo system can go.
