National General Insurance Review
It seems as though National General has been striving to make improvements over the past few years. National General Insurance reviews from multiple sources show good results. Their financial strength rating with AM Best is up from a B++ to an A-, and their BBB customer service satisfaction score has now risen to an A+. It is worth mentioning, though, that they’ve had 335 complaints filed against them over the past three years, and 160 of those have been filed, dealt with, and closed in the past 12 months.
Ratings Agency | Rating |
AM Best Financial Strength (2016) | A- (Stable) |
Better Business Bureau (2016) | A+ |
The National General auto insurance phone number for customer services is 1-888-293-5108. You can use this line for questions about National General insurance cancellation fees and other issues.
National General Insurance Discounts
Below are some of the discounts you can expect to qualify for when you purchase an auto policy from National General. You might not qualify for all available discounts, and the ones you qualify for may yield less than the maximum possible savings listed here in this chart. Because laws vary from state to state, so do the discounts available for National General customers:
Discount Type | Maximum % Savings |
OnStar Subscriber | 10% – 20% (on select coverages) |
GM/GMAC Customer Discount | Varies by state and GM service |
Paid-In-Full Discount | Varies by state |
GM Loyalty Discount | All insured vehicles must be GM vehicles; varies by number of vehicles |
Multi-Car Policy | 5 – 15% |
Multi-Policy (RV & Auto) | 20% |
Persistency Credit | 10% |
Low Mileage Discount | 54% |
Depending on what state you live in, you may also be able to qualify for one or more of the following discounts. But you’ll have to speak with a National General insurance agent to know for sure which ones you qualify for, as well as how much of a discount you’ll be able to get:
- Safe Driver Discount
- Motorcycle Discount
- GM Family First Discount
- Affinity Discounts
- GM Supplier Discount
National General Auto Insurance Options
Your basic automotive insurance policy from National General will have to include the coverages and minimum amounts required by your state. But you can always choose to carry higher amounts of coverage, as well as additional options:
- Bodily Injury Liability
- Property Damage Liability
- Collision
- Comprehensive
- Medical Payments
- Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage
- Personal Injury Protection
National General also goes above and beyond to offer their customers the following “Smart Services” which most other companies don’t (or don’t offer in exactly the same way):
- SmartValet – Valet service for picking up your damaged vehicle, taking it to a repair shop, dropping off a rental car at your home, returning the rental car when you’re done with it, and delivering your repaired vehicle once repairs are complete
- Guaranteed repairs – Lifetime Guarantee on all collision repairs made at any of National General’s Gold Medal Repair Shops
- Guaranteed claims service satisfaction – up tp $250 of your deductible is waived if you are dissatisfied with your claim service
- Emergency Expense Allowance – Up to $500 in food, lodging and travel expenses after a covered claim
- SmartReplacement – If you need to replace your vehicle after a total loss, National General will employ car-buying experts to find you an exact (or almost exact) replacement vehicle
- SmartInspect – Once your car has been repaired after a claim, National General will reinspect it upon request to ensure it is in top condition.
It’s worth noting that National General health insurance is no longer available.
Comparing National General Insurance Quotes
Before you decide to purchase an auto policy from National General – or any insurance company – it’s important to know how they treat different types of drivers. Depending on your perceived risk, your insurance company may charge you a higher or lower rate:
As you can see in the chart above, it appears as though National General, like the majority of insurance companies out there, prefers to give the best rates to drivers with the lowest perceived risk. A young driver with less driving experience is more likely to file a claim than the other two in the chart above, and therefore gets charged a higher rate. But these quotes are only estimates, and the price you get from your local National General agent may vary based on your personal circumstances.
Pros and Cons of National General Insurance
Pro | Con |
Smart Services add features and coverages which most other companies don’t offer | Mixed reviews on claims handling, processing timeliness, and billing |
Widespread discounts for using or being affiliated with the General Motors brand |
It seems as though National General has a lot to offer its potential customers. This is especially true if you happen to be affiliated with General Motors, GM affiliates, or own several different GM products. They also offer some pretty decent extra services that most automotive companies don’t offer. However, they do have some customer service issues which it seems as though they are trying to fix. And if you fall into a higher risk pool, you might have a difficult time getting an affordable premium. For all of these reasons, you should make sure you compare National General to a few other local providers to compare prices and features.
